Needles, herbal formulas, and slow-moving exercises rooted in centuries-old Chinese thought are sitting comfortably alongside blood pressure monitors and prescription pads. has not simply survived into the twenty first century, it has found new footing within global health systems, research labs, and everyday routines.
What makes this moment interesting is not nostalgia for an ancient practice, but the pace of change happening right now. Between 2024 and 2026, governments, the World Health Organization, and research institutions have all taken concrete steps to define, regulate, and test what TCM can actually offer modern patients. That shift is worth a closer look.
A system built on balance

At its core, Traditional Chinese Medicine rests on the idea that health reflects balance, particularly the flow of qi, or vital energy, through pathways in the body known as meridians. Practitioners diagnose imbalance through methods like pulse reading, tongue observation, and detailed questioning rather than lab panels alone. This framework predates modern biomedicine by thousands of years, yet it continues to shape how millions of people think about prevention rather than just treatment.
What has changed is the audience. TCM is no longer confined to Chinese households or specialty clinics; it shows up in integrative medicine departments at major hospitals across North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Researchers describe TCM as a time-honored therapeutic system encompassing herbal medicine, acupuncture, and qigong, and that breadth is exactly why it fits into so many different corners of modern healthcare.
Acupuncture enters the mainstream

Acupuncture is probably the most visible face of TCM , and it has moved well past the fringe. WHO’s own research priorities now include acupuncture and manual therapies for chronic conditions, with experts noting that research on acupuncture and manual therapies for vascular and neurological conditions… underscores the need to assess alternative and complementary treatments for chronic pain, circulation issues, and neuropathic disorders, areas where conventional medicine often has limited long-term solutions.

Pain clinics, cancer centers, and even some physical therapy practices now offer acupuncture as a complement, not a replacement, to standard care, largely because patients and clinicians alike are looking for options with fewer side effects for long-term symptom management.
Herbal medicine and the question of evidence

Chinese herbal formulas remain one of the more debated parts of TCM, mostly because quality and dosing have historically varied widely between products. That is starting to shift. Recent scientific sessions note that Chinese herbal medicine, when used within regulated and quality-controlled frameworks, shows potential in managing chronic inflammatory disorders, metabolic conditions, and supportive cancer care.
The key phrase there is regulated and quality-controlled. Without consistent sourcing and testing, herbal remedies can vary enormously in potency and even safety, which is exactly why so much current research effort is going into standardization rather than simply cataloguing traditional uses. Patients today are more likely to encounter herbal medicine through licensed practitioners or pharmacy-grade products than through unregulated market stalls, a meaningful shift from even a decade ago.
Tai chi, qigong, and healthy aging

Slow, deliberate movement practices like tai chi and qigong have quietly become some of the best-supported branches of TCM in scientific literature. Their appeal lies partly in simplicity. Evidence sessions highlight that Tai Chi and Qigong have demonstrated positive effects on balance, cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and fall prevention, particularly in older adults.
That combination of physical and mental benefit is why these practices show up in senior centers, hospital rehabilitation programs, and even corporate wellness schedules now. They require no special equipment, carry minimal injury risk, and fit naturally into aging populations across the world, from Beijing parks at sunrise to community centers in suburban Australia.
The WHO’s global push for integration

Perhaps the biggest institutional shift in recent years came with the World Health Organization adopting a new long-term roadmap. The Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 was formally adopted by the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly, setting out a decade-long plan for how traditional practices, including TCM, should be evaluated and folded into national health systems.
The strategy is built around four clear goals. It aims to strengthen evidence, ensure safety and regulation, integrate TCIM into health systems, and optimize its cross-sectoral value. This is not a symbolic gesture either; WHO followed up in December 2025 by hosting the Second Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, jointly organized with the Government of India… bringing together government ministers, scientists, Indigenous leaders, and practitioners from more than 100 countries.
Artificial intelligence and the modernization of TCM

One of the more unexpected developments in TCM’s modern story is its growing relationship with artificial intelligence. Researchers argue that AI could help validate centuries-old practices using contemporary scientific standards, noting that harnessing AI-powered diagnostics and analytics, TCM can validate its traditional practices through rigorous scientific methods, paving the way for broader acceptance and recognition globally.
This is not purely theoretical. A national survey conducted across thirteen medical institutions in China during the summer of 2025 gathered responses from 2587 individuals with health needs, including patients seeking TCM/Western medical treatment and individuals undergoing routine physical examinations, specifically to gauge attitudes toward AI-assisted TCM diagnosis. The fact that such large-scale surveys are happening at all shows how seriously institutions are treating the intersection of ancient practice and modern computing power.
Regulatory standards and quality control

Behind the scenes, a quieter but arguably more consequential shift has been happening in regulation. China’s National Medical Products Administration issued new rules in 2024, and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine followed with a detailed roadmap. That plan explicitly states 180 domestic standards and 30 international standards for TCM will be completed by the end of 2026.
This matters because standardization is the bridge between traditional practice and modern clinical trust. A new academic field, described as Traditional Chinese medicine regulatory science, has emerged as an interdisciplinary field… integrates multidisciplinary knowledge to develop new tools, standards and approaches for systematic evaluation of benefit-risk profiles. One area where TCM has found a genuine, if limited, foothold is supportive cancer care. As global cancer rates climb, with incidence projected to grow from 20 million cases in 2022… to 35 million by 2050, health systems are looking for affordable ways to manage symptoms alongside conventional treatment. Some regions have gone further than others in formalizing this approach.
In certain places, integration is already advanced. Notably, in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China, and Viet Nam, hospitals have implemented fully integrated oncology programmes, pairing acupuncture, herbal support, and nutritional guidance with chemotherapy and radiation. In many other parts of the world, however, that kind of formal integration remains rare, often limited by cost, training, and access to specialists.
Challenges: resources, biodiversity, and translation

TCM’s growth is not without friction, and honest coverage has to include that. A significant portion of herbal medicine relies on ingredients that are becoming harder to source sustainably, since many TCM ingredients come from valuable and rare plants or animals, such as Crocus sativus L., Saussurea involucrata, Cistanche deserticola Ma, Rhino, Pangolin, and Moschus berezovskii. That reliance creates real tension between demand and conservation.
There is also a communication gap that has nothing to do with biology. Researchers point out that effectively explaining TCM theory and philosophy in a more modern way is essential for integrating TCM into modern healthcare… the cultural differences between China and the West pose a significant challenge, and interpreting and disseminating TCM theories will require substantial investment. In other words, translating concepts like qi or meridians into language that fits evidence-based medicine is still an unfinished project, and probably will be for years to come.
TCM’s expanding footprint around the world

Outside China, TCM is being absorbed into national health frameworks at a pace that would have surprised observers a decade ago. In Türkiye, for example, moxa therapy combined with acupuncture is now offered in clinics where the practice is rooted in east Asian medicine… now regulated under Türkiye’s traditional and complementary medicine framework. That kind of formal recognition is becoming more common rather than exceptional.
The broader numbers back this up. According to WHO’s most recent global survey, in 2023, 90 of the 106 responding Member States reported having national policies on traditional, complementary and integrative medicine, a notable rise from 25 in 1999. That kind of growth over two decades signals a genuine, worldwide shift in how governments view practices like TCM, not as folk remedies to tolerate, but as components of formal healthcare policy.
Where things stand now

TCM is neither a relic nor a replacement for conventional medicine. It occupies a middle space, increasingly backed by regulation, research funding, and institutional attention, while still carrying open questions about evidence quality and sustainable sourcing. The next few years, particularly as WHO’s ten-year strategy unfolds and China’s standardization targets come due in 2026, will likely determine how much further that middle space expands.
What seems clear already is that curiosity about balance, prevention, and low-intervention care is not going away. Whether through a tai chi class at dawn or a herbal formula prescribed alongside chemotherapy, TCM has found durable relevance simply by adapting, slowly and carefully, to the standards of the world it now shares with modern medicine.
